Parent & Child Therapy
Attachment-based approaches that strengthen the parent–child bond.
Theraplay® and Filial Therapy
Alongside play therapy, I sometimes draw on two approaches that place the parent–child relationship right at the centre: Theraplay® and Filial Therapy. Both are grounded in attachment theory and child development, and both recognise that one of the most powerful ways to help a child is by strengthening their relationship with their parent or carer.
Theraplay®
I am trained to Level One in Theraplay® and Group Theraplay® through the Theraplay® Institute. This means I can integrate Theraplay®-informed activities into my work with children and families. These playful, structured activities are designed to build connection, trust, and regulation within the parent–child relationship. Theraplay® can be especially helpful when children struggle with attachment, regulation, or confidence, and when parents want practical ways to bring more warmth and connection into everyday life.

Theraplay® can support with:
- Strengthening parent–child relationships
- Reducing anxiety and improving emotional regulation
- Increasing a child’s sense of safety and security
- Building joy, playfulness, and positive interactions
Parents are actively involved, learning playful techniques they can continue at home to support ongoing connection

Filial Therapy
Filial Therapy is a family-focused approach that helps parents become the primary therapeutic agents in their child’s life. Instead of guiding the play session directly, in filial therapy, I coach parents in child-centred play skills so they can hold special play sessions with their child at home. Over time, this helps children express feelings, build self-esteem, and strengthen their bond with their parent. Filial Therapy is particularly useful when parents want to be more directly involved in the therapeutic process and are keen to develop new tools for connecting with their child.

Filial therapy can help with:
- Enhancing communication between parent and child
- Building empathy and understanding
- Reducing conflict and behavioural struggles
- Creating a more positive home environment
It’s a collaborative process that empowers parents with lifelong skills to support their child’s growth.
